Remove Your Existing Cylinder
Locate the screw on the edge of your door (the faceplate) that holds the cylinder in place. Remove it with a Phillips screwdriver. Insert your key, turn it slightly to the unlock position, and pull the cylinder out. Keep your old cylinder and screw — you'll want them if you ever move out.
Insert the Nuki Universal Cylinder
The Universal Cylinder replaces your old one. Slide it in from the exterior side of the door. The interior side (where the Smart Lock mounts) should stick out about 3mm past the door surface. Secure it with the screw from step 1. Test the cylinder with the included keys — make sure both interior and exterior sides turn smoothly.
Mount the Smart Lock
Place the mounting plate over the interior cylinder end. Use the included screws to secure it to the door. Then attach the Smart Lock to the mounting plate — it clicks into place magnetically. The lock should sit flat against the door with no wobble.
Calibrate via the App
Open the Nuki app and follow the setup wizard. The lock will learn your door's lock and unlock positions by running the motor through a full cycle. This takes about 30 seconds. The calibration ensures smooth operation and prevents the motor from over-rotating.
Configure Connectivity
Choose your connectivity mode. For the best battery life, use Thread/Bluetooth only (~12 months). For remote access without a hub, enable WiFi (~6 months battery). If you have a Thread border router (Apple TV, HomePod, Google Nest Hub), Matter over Thread gives you the best of both worlds — remote access with minimal battery impact.
Set Up Auto Unlock (Optional)
Auto Unlock uses your phone's GPS to detect when you're approaching home. When you enter a geofenced area, the lock prepares. When you reach your door, it unlocks automatically. Enable it in the app under Settings → Auto Unlock. It works best when you consistently approach from the same direction.
