Unboxing & First Impressions
The packaging is minimal and thoughtful — Nuki clearly cares about presentation without being wasteful. Inside you'll find the Smart Lock unit, the Universal Cylinder (a key differentiator), a USB-C charging cable with the clever magnetic connector, mounting plates, and a concise quick-start card.
The lock itself is noticeably smaller than the 3rd generation. It sits flush against the door without looking like a tech gadget bolted to your entrance. The matte finish picks up fewer fingerprints than the glossy previous model, which is a welcome improvement for something you touch multiple times a day.
Build quality is solid — there's a satisfying weight to it that says 'precision engineering' rather than 'cheap plastic.' The brushless motor is immediately apparent when you first test it: it's dramatically quieter than any other smart lock I've tested.
Installation
This is where Nuki genuinely shines. If you have a standard euro-profile cylinder door — which is virtually every door in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and most of Western Europe — installation takes about 15 minutes with just a screwdriver.
The process is straightforward: remove your existing cylinder, insert the Nuki Universal Cylinder, mount the Smart Lock on the interior side, and you're done. No drilling, no wiring, no modifications to the door or frame. The whole thing is completely reversible, which makes it perfect for renters.
The Universal Cylinder is the key innovation here. It replaces your existing euro-cylinder and provides the mechanical interface for the Smart Lock's motor. You keep your existing keys as backup — they still work from the outside, which gives peace of mind.
One minor note: if your door has a particularly thick rosette or escutcheon, you might need to adjust the cylinder length. Nuki includes adapters, but measure first.
Daily Use
After six months of daily use, the Nuki has become completely invisible in the best way possible. Auto Unlock via geofencing works about 90% of the time — when you approach your door with your phone in your pocket, the lock opens before you reach for the handle. The 10% failure rate is usually when GPS is flaky (underground parking garages, dense urban areas), and you can always use the app as backup.
The brushless motor is genuinely impressive. Unlocking takes less than a second, and the noise level is low enough that you won't wake anyone up coming home late. Previous Nuki generations had a noticeable mechanical whirr — this one just clicks.
Lock-on-leaving is configurable: you can set it to auto-lock after a time delay, when the Door Sensor detects the door closing, or manually. I use the Door Sensor trigger, which locks the deadbolt about 3 seconds after I pull the door shut.
Access management is excellent. You can create up to 200 access permissions with time windows, recurring schedules, or one-time codes. I've set up a code for my cleaning service that only works on Tuesday mornings, and a permanent access for my partner.
The Nuki App
The app has improved significantly over the years but still has room to grow. The core functionality — locking, unlocking, checking status, managing access — works reliably. The activity log is detailed and shows every lock/unlock event with timestamps.
The good: setup is genuinely straightforward, no account required for basic functionality (a privacy win), and the UI is clean. With 4M+ downloads and a 4.5 rating on app stores, Nuki clearly listens to user feedback.
The less good: the app can feel sluggish when connecting via Bluetooth (2-3 seconds to establish connection). WiFi mode is near-instant but uses more battery. Matter over Thread, when configured, offers the best of both worlds — fast local control with minimal power draw.
A big change in 2025: Nuki dropped the Premium subscription paywall. All WiFi features — remote access, smart home integrations, activity log — are now free. This was previously a €24.99/year add-on. Respect to Nuki for not nickel-and-diming customers.
Smart Home Integration
This is arguably Nuki's strongest category. With Matter over Thread support, the Smart Lock Pro works natively with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings — no bridge needed.
Matter support means the lock shows up as a native device in each platform's app. In Apple Home, you get lock/unlock in Control Center, Siri voice control, and automation triggers. Same for Google Home and Alexa. The Thread radio provides a mesh network connection that's faster than Bluetooth and uses less power than WiFi.
For Home Assistant users: Nuki has an official integration that exposes the lock as an MQTT device with full state reporting. No cloud dependency.
The Keypad 2 NFC is worth mentioning here — it's one of the first Aliro-certified devices (launched March 2026), which means it supports Apple Home Key. Tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock. It also has a fingerprint reader and traditional PIN codes.
Battery Life
Battery life heavily depends on your connectivity mode:
- Thread/Bluetooth only: ~12 months (Nuki's claim matches my experience) - WiFi enabled: ~6 months (constant WiFi connection drains faster) - Heavy use (10+ unlock cycles/day): reduce estimates by ~30%
The rechargeable lithium-polymer battery charges via a magnetic USB-C cable. The magnetic connector is a clever touch — you snap it on without removing the lock from the door. A full charge takes about 3 hours.
The app warns you at 20% battery, which gives you plenty of time. In six months I've charged it twice (WiFi mode, ~6-8 daily cycles).
Security
Smart lock security is a valid concern, and Nuki takes it seriously. The lock uses end-to-end encryption (AES-256) for all communications. The pairing process uses Diffie-Hellman key exchange. Even Nuki's servers can't decrypt your lock commands.
Physically, the lock is only accessible from the interior side of the door. The exterior looks unchanged — there's no visible tech for someone to tamper with. Your original keys still work as a mechanical backup.
Nuki has had independent security audits by AV-TEST (the German IT security institute) and holds their certification. The firmware receives regular updates.
One thing worth noting: no smart lock makes your door *more* secure than a good mechanical lock. What it does is make access management more convenient and auditable. The activity log is actually a security feature — you always know who locked or unlocked your door and when.

The Verdict
The Nuki Smart Lock Pro (4th Gen) is the best smart lock you can buy for a European home. The combination of easy installation, Matter/Thread support, no subscription, and genuine build quality puts it ahead of Yale, Tedee, and Loqed on most metrics.
Is it perfect? No. The app could be faster, geofencing isn't 100% reliable, and €269 is a real investment. But if you want a smart lock that works with everything, installs in 15 minutes, and doesn't lock you into a subscription, this is the one to get.
For renters especially, the completely reversible installation is a game-changer. You take it with you when you move — try doing that with a Loqed.
